On the Cutting-Edge of Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

ADVANCED/EXTENDED SINUS SURGERY

Rhinologists are otolaryngologists (ENTs) who have completed additional training beyond the standard five years of general otolaryngology residency training. As the only fellowship-trained rhinologist in the state of Rhode Island and Providence metropolitan area, Dr. Alejandro Vázquez specializes in the management of the most complex disorders of the nose and sinuses. He has a special interest in the use of advanced/extended surgical techniques in the treatment of recalcitrant sinusitis and has published widely on this subject.

Extended Frontal Sinus Surgery & Other Advanced Procedures: Features

ADVANCED/EXTENDED FRONTAL SINUS SURGERY

Certain situations call for the use of advanced or extended frontal sinus surgery procedures. One such example is the Draf IIb frontal sinusotomy (sometimes referred to as a "drill-out" procedure) performed by Dr. Vázquez in the video above. These procedures are often indicated for cases where multiple prior surgeries have failed, or when certain anatomic variations do not allow the use of conventional techniques.

ADVANCED/EXTENDED MAXILLARY SINUS SURGERY

Patients who have persistent sinusitis even after appropriate conventional endoscopic sinus surgery may require the use of extended techniques. One such example of this is the endoscopic maxillary mega antrostomy (EMMA), performed in the video above by Dr. Vázquez.
